  greetings, former children:.

  i really miss my childhood home, which we left in 1960. dad sold it for some 12,000 dollars; it recently sold for somewhere under 1.5 million.

  it's only a tiny bungalow but in a prosperous bay area town, not too far from san francisco, california.. the art and literature that are so important to me -- and for many others of us -- got their start in my heart and mind here in the california mountains.

  Thanks, charonsdog, for sharing that bit of childhood.

  I believe we do romanticize our early lives. Otherwise, parts of it would've been intolerable, what we've blocked out. Too bad about the 'hood going to the dogs. Seen that far too many times. You must have been really deflated by that. Sorry.

  Your childhood was different from mine in that you were already JWs, an entirely other way of living from us who were just back calls or Bible studies -- "people of good will" -- as we were called then. No commitment.

  I really miss my childhood home, which we left in 1960. Dad sold it for some 12,000 dollars; it recently sold for somewhere under 1.5 million. It's only a tiny bungalow but in a prosperous Bay Area town, not too far from San Francisco, California.

  The art and literature that are so important to me -- and for many others of us -- got their start in my heart and mind here in the California mountains. The reason I'm posting an interior shot of my house (found it online, totally remodeled and staged) is because it was the back porch and my bedroom.

  Outside the window you'll see a eucalyptus tree (HEY, SMIDDY!) and mountain range. Both were my early inspiration toward the artistic depiction of trees and mountains on canvas, with oil paints. Even as a tiny guy, I was fascinated by trees and mountains. I just stared and stared out the window, wondering about the houses and people on that mountain . . . I was sick for a while in 3rd grade, and I wrote a letter to my classmates about my observations. Weird kid.

  Well, this is where I got my start.

  While it was impossible to see everything in the 20 days I was on the coast -- Noosaville, the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Musgrave Island, etc. -- you have helped me understand it from a native's viewpoint. Sad about the indigenous beasties being threatened by the interloper man.

  Yes, let's find some answers. I don't think it's gonna be Jehovah's Kingdom!

  From my tale, "It is Getting Dark."

  It is getting dark.

  A stiff wind is coming in off the bay and the eucalyptus trees are swaying. The two-story house next door does not block my view of the sea; it is set back a bit. What I can see is partially obscured by a stand of trees. The gentle back-and-forth motion of those graceful eucalyptus causes the light pouring through my window to cut in and out.

  Hypnotic. Comfortable. Warm.

  Very well expressed, smiddy, and thanks again for your request. Yes, about the diversity of subjects. Sometimes when I say no more poetry for me on JWD, you and others pop up and encourage me! It's not everyone's cup of tea.

  You call it gum, I call it eucalyptus -- my favorite tree! When I went to the Gold Coast some 20 years ago, you can imagine my delight in walking through entire forests. They are here in California in abundance. When I see one, I hug it. I love the peeling bark and the pungent smell. They are used here as windbreaks and raised for firewood.

  The violent, angry and sullen clouds momentarily give way to the sun. Thongs of crazed, vitamin D deficient humans crowd into the streets for a fleeting glimpse of the brilliant orb. Like a scared child running to hide behind its mother, the sun quickly retreats behind the clouds. The depressed masses, eyes glazed by seasonal affect depression, survey the soggy, moss-covered, decaying landscape, and groan. Obeying their evolutionary instincts, they get in their cars to drive to Starbucks for the drug, caffeine, that is so critical to their survival.   THE SEVEN REDWOODS

  Seated in a lounge of cushioned steel, I lean

  back and follow my wandering eyes up seven

  towering trunks till their limbs and needles mass
  

  as one, hiding rigid shafts that pierce the sky.

  Removed from native soil and coastal fogs, I
  

  marvel that dry and hot have harmed us not.

  I, too, was born in mist but truly grew though
  

  warmth was scarce and a steely cool prevailed.

  Thrive I do amidst a scorching heat, the parching
  

  wind; like these trees, I, somehow, shall survive.
